About AT&T

AT&T traces its history back to Alexander Graham Bell's invention of the telephone in 1876. American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T) was established in 1885 to build and operate long-distance telephone networks and eventually became the central company behind the Bell System. For much of the 20th century, AT&T was the dominant telecommunications provider in the United States and became widely associated with the Bell System and the nickname “Ma Bell.” In 1984, following a major antitrust agreement with the U.S. government, AT&T was broken up and its local telephone operations were divided among seven Regional Bell Operating Companies, commonly called the “Baby Bells.” One of those companies, Southwestern Bell Corporation, later became SBC Communications. SBC expanded through acquisitions and ultimately acquired the original AT&T Corporation in 2005, adopting the AT&T name and creating the modern AT&T Inc. AT&T subsequently expanded its wireless business through Cingular Wireless and the acquisition of BellSouth, becoming a major nationwide wireless carrier. The company was also an important part of the early smartphone era, including its exclusive U.S. launch partnership with Apple for the original iPhone in 2007. Today, AT&T is primarily known for its wireless service, 5G network, AT&T Fiber broadband, and FirstNet, a purpose-built communications network for first responders. AT&T continues to emphasize the combination of fiber and wireless connectivity, making it one of the major telecommunications providers in the United States.
